Caches No’s 5567 to 5596 – London Calling – Part I

London Calling, the first Mega event ever held in the centre of London… well I’m no fan of the capital, but I wasn’t going to miss out on a Mega event.

So, early on Saturday morning… early for me at least, before 7:00am anyway, I drove to Menston railway station to start my journey to that London on the 07:02 train.

A day return to London cost £79, which is is about the same price that it would have cost in diesel to drive there and car park fee for the day… and driving would have taken 4.5 hours each way… the train got me to Kings cross Station in two and three quarter hours…

I didn’t arrive at Platform 9 3/4, but it was my first port of call

The event itself was held in Westminster Central Hall, right next to Westminster Abbey, It didn’t open until 11:00, so I had time to walk from Kings Cross… I actually hadn’t realised just how far it was or I would have gone by tube !

The organisers had decided on the London bus as the symbol for the event so the had a log book that was the shape of a bus (well an impression of a bus)

28th August 2021 – London Calling 2021 Lab Cache – Hands Across London – cache #5569
The organisers had put out several sets of lab caches, the first ten were in the hall and were a bit of a mixed bag, some very good ones and others that were a bit naff to tell the truth

28th August 2021 – LC21 – Thames Trail 1 Lab Cache – Somerset House – cache #5579
After doing the labs in the hall, I got together with the Leeds crew as we had booked a trip up to the Skygarden (well there is a cache up there) for the middle of the afternoon, so we headed off to the Walkie Talkie… grabbing a few caches and Lab locations along the way

28th August 2021 – G’day London! Lab Cache – Gringotts Bank – cache #5580

28th August 2021 – LC21 – Thames Trail 2 Lab Cache – Mary Le Bow – cache #5583
Mary Le Bow ? looks more like a bloke to me

(It is a statue of Sir John Smith who was one of the leaders of the first English colony in America)

28th August 2021 – LC21 – Thames Trail 2 Lab Cache – Bank of England – cache #5584

28th August 2021 – LC21 – Thames Trail 2 Lab Cache – Leadenhall Market – cache #5585

28th August 2021 – Sky Garden GC88YXD – cache #5586
The Walkie Talkie is a so named because of it’s shape. The Sky Garden takes up floors 34 – 37, and although entrance is free, it is by ticket and the numbers of tickets per day are limited – presumably due to the number of lifts available to evacuate people in case of emergency

The cache is a Virtual cache, for which the main task is to go up to it and take a picture from the top

28th August 2021 – London Bridge Wander Lab Cache – The Monument – cache #5587
After the Sky Garden we headed up towards Tower Bridge to get to more lab caches put out along the river banks

28th August 2021 – LC21 – Thames Trail 2 Lab Cache – Monument – cache #5588
The thing about London is that there is only a limited number of ‘top’ attractions, so these end up on more than one set of lab caches

28th August 2021 – London Bridge Wander Lab Cache – Remains of the old London Bridge – cache #5589

28th August 2021 – From a Swan to the Canary: St Magnus the Martyr GC13M76 – cache #5590
This caused some difficulty finding… it was more a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth rather than many hands making light work… but we got there in the end

28th August 2021 – LC21 – Thames Trail 2 Lab Cache – St Dunstan in the East – cache #5591

28th August 2021 – Dunstan’s Delight GC1RWTN – cache #5592
This one was easier to find… the hint only left you with a couple of possibilities of places to look

28th August 2021 – War Memorial #990 ~ London – Siege of Malta GC8HTEM – cache #5593
An Earth cache based on this block of stone brought over from Malta

28th August 2021 – LC21 – Thames Trail 2 Lab Cache – Tower of London – cache #5594

28th August 2021 – LC21 – Thames Trail 2 Lab Cache – London Wall – cache #5595

28th August 2021 – LC21 – Thames Trail 2 Lab Cache – St Katharine Docks – cache #5596
And that was about as far as we got as a group, because time was pressing and Kerry (coinkezza) and I were booked on the same train back from Kings Cross – her to Doncaster and me back to Leeds, and we had no time to carry on dawdling along as a big group going at the speed of the slowest walkers – all of whom were staying in hotels in London anyway so had no time constraints, and another day to find the rest of the caches
