Caches No’s 5314 to 5340 – Piratemania 13 Part I

Maybe 13 is an unlucky number after all… Piratemania 13 should have been held in 2020, but like all other events it got cancelled, and that wasn’t all the bad luck… Instead of seeing people for Piratemania in 2020, I saw them at Steve ‘Madyokel’ Bolam’s funeral, Steve had been the chief organiser of Piratemania for many years, and was going to be sorely missed.

It was going to be the first time I had socialised with a group of people since I was in Devon last year… which was similar for most people and there was an air of apprehension about it… Everyone was doing Covid tests

30th July 2021 – B B Q with the Pirates GC9AQVP – cache #5314
As usual I wasn’t camping, but staying in a hotel about 3 miles from the site, but on the Friday night I went along to the event, which was sociable as it was the first time most people had seen each other for 2 years… the adults looked the same, but the children, 2 years older, were much different

31st July 2021 – Piratemania 13. Bermuda Triangle GC8GC64 – cache #5315

Swinethorpe pirates – Inside the Triangle – Adventure Lab Caches
There were of course some Lab Caches put out for the event, some had been seen before, some were the same as previous years, and some you got wet at if you weren’t careful

A group of us then decided that we would go on a little walk to find some of the caches that had been put out for the event, the first one had a big crowd around, as you might expect at the gates of a Mega event… the cache was missing, all we could find was some broken fishing line…
So a search of caching bags and pockets was undertaken, a container here, a log sheet there, a cable tie there and a temporary replacement cache was fashioned.

31st July 2021 – Route 64 – La Rue de Harby GC951RD – cache #5327

31st July 2021 – Route 64 – Border View GC951TB – cache #5328
In any group of cachers there are those who rush to make the find and those who are just along for the walk and the company… Those who rush get to the cache first, unless they can’t find it !

31st July 2021 – Route 64 – Border Crossing GC951TV – cache #5329
We did wonder what the cyclist who had taken a break here thought when suddenly surrounded by a group of people, some wearing full pirate dress !

31st July 2021 – Route 64 – B’owl GC951W5 – cache #5330

31st July 2021 – Church Micro 11487…Harby GC7G016 – cache #5331
Although this was a multicache we didn’t bother trying to find the answers, we took one look at the feature on the side of the road and thought there has to be a cache there… and there was (you work on the assumption that on a trail like this there is going to be a cache within a few metres of the minimum allowed distance of 161mtrs… so when you see a feature that is the right distance away from the previous cache there is a good chance that the next cache is there)

31st July 2021 – The Queen Is Dead GC6A126 – cache #5332

31st July 2021 – War Memorial #1414 ~ Harby GC96CDQ – cache #5335
And the War Memorial multicache even further away from the village… that pesky minimum distance between caches coming onto play again

31st July 2021 – Little Bridges # 2196 Plogsland Round GC98DWZ – cache #5336
We then had a choice of retracing our route back through the village, or the direct route heading across the fields on the bank of the drainage ditch – however there was a junction of ditches half way across and we didn’t know whether we would be able to cross there, so we went back through the village and took up along the drainage ditch where it crossed the other road until we came to this cache

31st July 2021 – Plogsland Round – Lakeview GC98JVD – cache #5337
More of a pond than a lake in the middle of summer

31st July 2021 – Route 64 – Plogsland Crossroads GC98JX9 – cache #5338
