Caches No’s 5279 to 5301 – A Holiday in Devon

By Summer the Covid situation had eased, so when the schools went back in September Angel78 and I took a break in Devon, in a thatched cottage (called approriately Fox Cottage). Social Distancing was still in place and so we kept to ourselves pretty much and avoided busy places.

Many geocaches had been disabled due to Covid, CO’s didn’t want the virus passed on by people handling caches, and they didn’t necessarily want to travel to maintain them if logbooks etc needed replacing, so we didn’t do many physical caches, but did do the local Lab Caches – the first ones of which that we did were the New Town of the Abbotts (of Torre Abbey) Lab Caches.

Although I had been to Devon a couple of times in the last few years, for the Summer Camp and the Mega, the town of Honiton was a place I had not visited since I was on holiday with my parents, 45 or so years earlier, but we went there to find the Historic Honiton Lab Caches.

9th September 2020 – Historic Honiton Lab Cache – Honiton Pottery – cache #5286
Quite disappointed to find the pottery had closed down. My mother bought a few pieces when we were on holiday in the 1970’s, and I think there is still a bowl around here somewhere – holding a plant pot.

9th September 2020 – Historic Honiton Lab Cache – Copper Castle – cache #5287
This was a confusing one… the question was what is the number of the lamp post – but the number of the lamp post outside the door – the one shown in the picture below – didn’t work… so, find the next nearest lamp post !

9th September 2020 – Life’s a Beach #39 – Sidmouth GC72A0E – cache #5289
After visiting Honiton we went to the seaside Fish and Chips, and had a nice walk along the beach getting the clues for this multicache, the final of which was in a place with a lot of people passing by, so took some subtlety to retrieve and replace unseen

10th September 2020 – 10. Shaldon / Ringmore Loop – Trig Point GC6F12J – cache #5290
This cache was near where we were staying, but rather than being by the coast was on top of a hill… and wasn’t there. Easy enough to find the Trig Point, but the cache was missing – I found what I thought was the place where it had been hid, but no cache. The DNF I posted prompted a message from the CO saying the cache was indeed missing and granting me a find

10th September 2020 – Buckfastleigh Down by the Park GC6BNY7 – cache #5291
We went to Buckfastleigh to go to the Otter Sanctuary, well worth a visit if you want to watch otters playing (we do have them in the river at home now, pictures appear on local Facebook groups, but I have never seen them, I’m not by the river early enough in the morning I guess)
While waiting for our allotted time slot we had a walk around the local park and found this cache

After visiting the otters we went along to Totnes and had a walk around the town… or maybe it was a Bimble

The next day we ended up having a meal in Exeter, and as we were down by the dock area it seemed the thing to do to go and do the Exeter’s Historic Quayside lab caches… there were a couple of other sets of Lab caches in Exeter, but one set was enough to help digest our meal
