My favourite cache, GC45CC – Ye Olde Survey Monuments was 15 years old, and fellow YOSM’ers decided to hold an event just north of Glasgow to celebrate, so I booked a hotel room and started planning my route to Glasgow, calling at a few YOSMs on the way of course, which meant that my route wasn’t the most direct !

YSM013 Dent
The first part of my route took me up to the more remote part of the Yorkshire Dales to visit this location
The Dent “surface block” is very much a subsurface block! It is buried several inches down in a deep dark hole – but easy to find as it is an obvious deep dark hole!

YSM078 Kirkby Stephen
The Kirkby Stephen FBM is relatively easy to find on top of the banking of a busy road, fortunately there is parking right opposite provided you don’t mind bumping up the kerb between bollards – there are missing bollards to facilitate this.

YSM201 Swarthy Hill
A bit of a detour to this as it’s not on the M6 heading from Yorkshire to Scotland, but 40 miles away on the west coast of the Lakes, but it was a nice day for a drive.
The pillar is on top of the ridge next to the road, but you can’t get to it from the road side as the hill is covered in gorse, bracken and brambles. The way to approach is from the Roman Fort site about 500m south, where you can get to the top of the ridge then walk along the edge of the field to the pillar, which is getting lost in the undergrowth

YSM564 Dundraw
The last of three YOSMs in the North Lakes area, another easy to find roadside pillar

Next to the Dundraw pillar was this cache, so I found it while I was there – sometimes I have to find ‘normal’ caches – well it was the first regular cache I had found while by myself since the journey back from the Mega last August

YSM168 Miltonhead
A more notable trig pillar than most as it is on the site of the house where Major-General William Roy was born, Maj-Gen Roy was one of the first exponents of the Geodetic Survey principal of triangulation to create military maps, and was involved in the formation of the Ordnance Survey.
Without him there would be no YOSM cache !

YSM672 Hurlet Hill
Last of the day, I parked in the pub car park at the bottom of the hill and walked up through the woods to the pillar
On my way down I disturbed a deer – I was a little surprised to see a deer in a relatively built up location

Next morning I got up early, fortified myself with a full Scottish breakfast courtesy of Morrison’s cafe, then headed to the Northern edge of Glasgow to meet many other cachers in the car park at the bottom of Auchineden hill. Anice sunny day for a mass walk up to the summit, though there was plenty of snow on the ground in places
The event was organised by Gail Burton (of the Burt0ns) and I’m not sure what I should thank Gail for the most ?
An excellent event ?
A friendly reception to a long distance traveler ?
Providing us with sausage rolls and shortbread ?
… or for organising the perfect weather for the day ?

The YOSM 15th Anniversary event was held at this pillar – my 118th YSM ‘find’

Found while at the YOSM Birthday event – I can’t say it was hard, I just followed the crowd and stood at the GC while Steve73306 furtled around in the undergrowth for the cache

Steve73306, Uilebheist and I headed here in a straightish line from the Trigopoly cache and just managed to locate this one before the rest of the crowd arrived – a crowd which inclded the Air Sea rescue helicopter collecting someone who had slipped and damaged themselves so couldn’t get back under their own steam (not one of the cachers)

An interesting place to visit, and we all trooped through with the CO so no need to send any emails as we shouted random answers at her and someone must have got it right… it was a bit like Bingo when we assessed the length and height of the feature… or maybe we were just guessing that nights lottery numbers !
I gave a favourite point for this cache mainly for the CO handing out sweeties !

After the event I drove up to this pillar on my way back to England – okay this is a few miles North of Auchineden Hill and England is many miles South, but I was too close to pass it up !
