Caches No’s 3018 to 3021 – Trigpoints on the Way Home

After raining all night it was surprisingly nice on Sunday morning, so I thought I might go back to the forest and see if it was practical to get to the Trig Point in the field next door to claim another YSM… but the field had been ploughed only a week before and then it had rained loads, so the field was not really possible to cross without getting exceedingly muddy.
Because of this I decided not to bother with the Salcey Forest YSM and headed off to the next nearest one, and then the next, and the next, and the next until I got home.

Cold Ashby “trigonometrical station” – YSM428
Nice to get to the place where it began. Unfortunately it looks like the plaque commemorating Sergeant Mullinger’s observations is soon going to be lost in the new hedge that has been planted.
The plaque says there are 11,678 such trigonometrical stations in the country, so there are plenty more places for this cache yet !

Cloudesley Bush trigpoint – YSM413
This location is a few miles off the M1 near Lutterworth. A ditch and a thick hedge separate this pillar from the roadside, but fortunately there is a convenient nearby field entrance, though it was a little muddy underfoot walking along by the hedge to the pillar

The Herdings trigpoint – YSM202
A detour into the outskirts of Sheffield brought me to this trig point which is currently fenced off in a building site while they build some more new houses nearby – though as the pillar and the neighbouring tree are fenced of in a little compound of their own inside the building site I guess they are going to be left alone in the construction

Heath Common trigpoint – YSM432
I had tried to get to this trigpoint on the way back from Norfolk at the end of July, but been defeated by the 6ft tall close packed (and wet) bracken which fills the corner of land this pillar is on.
However by the end of October the bracken was dying away – and somebody else had beaten a path through to the pillar so it was accessible !
