Caches No’s 2989 to 2999 – The Way South to 3,000

I had written the numbers from 3000 to 2980 on a piece of paper and filled in all the caches I intended to find on the way down to Northampton in order against the high numbers and all the caches I had found in order against the lower numbers… the theory being that when there were no blank spaces left I would have just the right number of caches to get to he 3,000 milestone at the Mega.
But then on the night before I realised (fortunately) that I had missed out number 2988… so on my list of interesting caches on the way down to Northampton I had to fit in another cacheĀ

25th October 2013 – Lady Chatterley’s Cache GCG0G7 – cache #2989
The first of the ‘interesting’ caches was this virtual, in a village where D.H. Lawrence used to visit, and based one of the locations in one of his books
A lovely little village with a nice church, there are people who take photographs of things that look like letters, the Lych Gate is a perfect letter ‘A’

25th October 2013 – The Hemlock Stone – Fact or Fiction GC20EW1 – cache #2990
From Lady Chatterley’s virtual cache my next stop was this earthcache, parked in the car park over the road and wandered across to the rock.
A lovely sunny Autumn day really made the colours stand out on my photograph

25th October 2013 – Ye Ole Survey Monuments GC45CC – cache #2991
Cold Harbour trigpoint – YSM010
The first of the five YSM’s I found on my way down to Northampton. Not sure why this place is called Cold Harbour, as it’s in the middle of rural Nottinghamshire and about as far away from the sea as you can get in England !

25th October 2013 – Charnwood Beacon GC2XX0P – cache #2992
There were a few cars in the car park (the barrier was out of order so parking was free !) and a few people walking dogs about, but no-one on the north side of the rocks to wonder what I was doing examining the rocks ! I thought I might have trouble locating the cache with the GPS signal bouncing off the rock face, but in the end there was no doubt when I got to the right place because of the pile of rocks covering the cache !

25th October 2013 – Charnwood EC1: The Ancient Rocks of Beacon Hill GC2778Y – cache #2993
Another earthcache based on the geology of this place which was once an undersea volcano so has various different sedimentary and igneous rock features, including the “Old Man of the Beacon”

Charnwood Beacon trigpoint – YSM068
Excellent place, well worth a visit, with a Traditional cache, an Earthcache and a YOSM trigpoint all within a few yards of each other

25th October 2013 – Lazy Layby Caches – 16 – Stepladder Required GC4JK26 – cache #2995
As I had cocked up the numbers on my cache count to 3,000 I needed a quick driveby, and this was it, an unremarkable cache 7ft up in an ivy covered tree – but dead easy to spot and reachable without a ladder

Wistow trigpoint – YSM324
Took a couple of minutes to spot this one as it is hidden out of sight of the road, fortunately the gate into the field was open so access to the pillar was easy once I had worked out where it was

Gumley Wood trigpoint – YSM530
Also the easiest of the five to get to, as it literally is on the side of the road.

Arthingworth trigpoint – YSM408
The last of the five YSM’s on my way down to Northampton.
Another easy to get to trig as it is just over a ditch from the road, with a footpath across the ditch not more than 10 yards away

25th October 2013 – Welcome to the Halloween Mega GC4MB7M – cache #2999
What an excellent pre-event event ! lots of faces old and new to talk to. As I had carefully counted caches over the previous month to make this my 2,999th I didn’t go rushing out for the new night cache !
