Stories from my Geocaching adventures

Caches No’s 4533 & 4534 – 9 Usual Suspects

One of the nice things about spending a week camping with a bunch of geocachers is that you meet new people, form friendships with people who were until then just casual acquaintances and get to know friends a whole lot better.
One such at the mega was Jen of the Wright girls. We had met at events before and shared a drink and a chat and a laugh, and we spent time chatting and drinking and having a laugh with each other during the week at Newby Hall, and then when we got home found that we were missing each others company. Caches No’s 4518 to 4532 – 2018 Yorkshire Mega part 2

Mega day, we had been working towards this for just over 3 years, and it was here at last… The sun shone, the cachers came, we had two thousand attendees (well we had almost 2,000 log in, and we know some didn’t !)
and a good time was had by all.
We have given those committees who follow in our footsteps a hard act to follow. We didn’t really do anything novel, we just took all the best things about previous 10 Megas and did them all a little bit better. Continue reading

Caches No’s 4497 to 4517 – Yorkshire Mega Part 1

And then there were no days left, Monday morning I drove up to Newby Hall with my tent and set it up ready for the fun to start…
There were all sorts of jobs that needed doing at the campsite, cleaning toilets and showers, emptying bins, rearranging furniture etc that needed Committee Members to do, but there was also being the Committee Member at events with the Log Sheep task that needed doing, so I volunteered myself for that job and avoided the toilet cleaning ! Caches No’s 4486 to 4496 – Piratemania 11

And then all of a sudden there was just one weekend to go to the Mega – and the weather was awful, blowing a howling gale and pouring with rain – not the weekend to be camping !
I made 7 trips to the Newby Hall campsite the weekend before the Mega started, one of those was on the Saturday Morning on my way over to the Dalby Forest for Piratemania Continue reading

Caches No’s 4480 to 4485 – Spring and Early Summer Events

Less than 6 months to go to the Mega and it started getting quite busy, we needed to have Committee meetings every 3-4 weeks and I had a flock of log sheep to make and the mega day Program to help with, and all the side events to make the cache pages for and the Mega geocoins to design, and ‘woodies’ for all the events to design and so on and so forth (and I thought I was getting it quite easy, others on the Committee seemed to be much busier sorting the campsite, the entertainment, setting out hundreds of caches on cache trails etc)
No time for caching then, unfortunately. Continue reading

Caches No’s 4474 to 4479 – Springtime in Portsmouth

I have long wanted to go and see HMS Victory, which resides in Portsmouth Naval Dockyard, and one day I mentioned this to Angel78, and she said she wouldn’t mind going to see Victory and the Mary Rose, so we chose a convenient date and booked a hotel.
Our plans were nearly scuppered by ‘The Beast From The East’ which came a few days before we were due to go and had half the country snowed in. Continue reading
